STEM STORIES: Phenomenal STEM(ist) Maya Byfield

Black women have been instrumental in moving the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) forward. However, their significant contributions have often gone unnoticed or unappreciated throughout time. We want to highlight the women who are STEM leaders. Amplifying their voices not only centers their experiences, but serve as representative role models for Black girls who will envision themselves in similar positions. Toward this end, we will have a series of episodes that focus on the wholistic experiences of Black women in STEM; these will be call STEM Stories.


Today we are centering Dr. Maya Byfield's STEM Story. Dr. Maya Byfield passion is bridging innate talent and real-world opportunities. A role model to female and minority students, she helps a wide cross-section of young people chart promising futures. A Professor of Biological Sciences at with Seminole State College, Dr. Byfield has a BS in Biology from Oakwood University, MS in Biomedical Sciences, Ph.D. in Molecular Pharmacology from Albert Einstein College of Medicine.and conducted her Post-Doctoral associate work in Neuroscience at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine. She is the founder and director of Phenomenal STEM(ist), a book and programming effort that guides individuals toward to becoming successful in STEM.
