Black Women's Digital Wellbeing Networks

Creating Online fitness and wellbeing communities

In today's digital age, the power of social media opens windows into the lives of individuals and fitness professionals alike. The proliferation of fitness magazines on these channels has further democratized access to a wealth of information, all at the swipe of a finger. Yet, amid this explosion of content and talent, a crucial question remains: where is the representation of Black women or their culturally specific concerns within these digital spaces? The lack of representation does not solely impact individual Black women; it limits the narratives we hear, the role models we emulate, and the perspectives we consider.

In an effort to create a more equitable and diverse wellbeing communities, Dr. Shanice Jones Cameron has been investigating the ways that digital spaces are increasingly striving to reflect the richness of Black women's health experiences. An Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, she researches health and wellness discourses that are distributed through social media with a focus on Black women's health and well-being digital networks and communities. Dr. Jones Cameron is also the founder of Her Guided Evolution®, a digital platform, podcast, and YouTube channel that hosts conversations about self-development and encourages women to practice holistic self-care and prioritize their well-being.
